Project Description

What is Mining Engineering

Mining EngineeringMining Engineering is a specialised field that generally falls within Mechanical Engineering. Mining is the act of extracting useful resources, such as coal and metal bearing rocks and minerals (ore) from mines. Mining Engineering deals exclusively with the extraction and processing of ore, unlike Geotechnical Engineering which can consider any aspect of earth materials.

A Mining Engineer is used from the discovery of mineral deposits to the design, monitoring and analysis of the mining site. Mining Engineers spend the majority of their time in an office where they analyse data from drilling and geological reports before planning and designing the site. They will, on occasion, visit the mining site to supervise, inspect the progress of a project or troubleshoot problems. Students are trained in computer aided design and finite element software, where they learn mechanical design skills to solve problems.

While Mining Engineers are amongst the highest paid in the world and are multi-skilled in many areas of Engineering, one downside is the remote location of mining sites. This usually requires lengthy travel and extended working times (such as 8 days on, 8 days off work).
