We caught up with Som in between the static event schedule, to chat about their car and team.

How did you improve on the university’s entry last year? What makes this car unique?
“We have had some good engine development this year. It’s the same Yamaha that we have been running since 2009. We got 200km out of one rebuild which is much more than we have had in previous years.”

What is an example of how you improved teamwork/ team morale?
“We kind of introduced playing football every day after testing. It’s been really good for team members to drop the workload, tackle each other, rip each other to bits and go back to working again.”

What are some of the sacrifices the individuals in the team have had to make to get ready for this competition?
“Coursework has suffered hugely for some of us. Across the whole team it’s not too bad but my grades have suffered. The sacrifice of grades is definitely worth it when I look at how well the car has turned out.”

What was the first task given to you when you joined the team?
“I had to chase up Burger Fuel which had been a potential sponsor for many years. For those of you who are not from New Zealand, it is a very niche burger company that prides itself on the automotive market. They have piston burgers and all sorts of stuff. The team decided it was a good idea for me to chase them up and get some money out of them. I didn’t even get a burger.”
