What is Tissue Engineering
Tissue Engineering is dedicated to the restoration, maintenance or replacement of human tissue. Tissue can be described as a combination of similar cells that form a structural material within the human body such as cartilage. Tissue Engineering combines many different natural and synthetic materials to produce effective human tissue that won’t be rejected by the body.
Engineers are often required to develop replacement human tissue either by using natural bio-materials or a synthetic replacement such as polyester fibers. By understanding and researching human and animal cells, they are able to create artificial organs and work with surgeons (or other medical professionals) to develop the procedures that allow these organs to be transplanted into a human. Tissue Engineers have the option of working for medical companies or starting their own business for research or consulting purposes.
