What is Protein Engineering
Protein Engineering relates to the development of different proteins. A protein is a molecule that contributes a large portion of the mass of every life form and plays significant role in our existence. The Engineering of proteins occurs by changing its chemical structure to produce desirable properties and can even include removing certain types of harmful proteins.
Protein Engineers use Computer Aided Design software to model the complex structures of proteins in 3D. Using their knowledge of chemistry and biology, they manipulate the structures to create different variations of protein that can be used in everyday life. Some examples of designer proteins include protein supplements for weight gain, antibodies and vaccines used to cure diseases.
Protein Engineers generally find employment in the medical or environmental fields as well as in consumer product manufacturers.
