UWA did not compete in the dynamic events this year. Team leader Michael was generous enough to discuss what eventuated over the weekend.

“The team is quite inexperienced this year. The transfer of experience wasn’t great from last years team as we bought a second year car to last years comp and it has showed. Despite this we decided to build a completely new car at the start of the year and practice the fundamentals of design and innovation. We set ourselves a hard task and simply underestimated how difficult it would be. Most of these guys will be around next year and now know exactly what is required to be successful.”

UWA is the only team that we spoke to who has Arts students within their team
“Some of the people doing the media stuff are arts students. We also had some commerce students that were in charge of the team finances. They pulled out halfway through the year after they realised the project was not suiting their best interests.”

How have you balanced technical work and managing of the team this year? Which industry would you like to work in when you finish?
“I did a bit of aero but have mainly focused on the management role. When I took the role on I didn’t expect that I would become this interested in it. I keep learning so much every day that every idea I have changes each week. At this stage I really don’t know what I want to do when I finish.”

What does your mum or girlfriend think of the project?
“My mum calls every now and then to check if I’m still alive. She got used to it pretty quickly. My girlfriend gets upset occasionally due to the huge time commitment thats required and thats understandable. Its just the nature of the project.”
